[21 September 2023, Hong Kong]After the success of its recent tour to Nanjing and Shanghai,the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is thrilled to take part in the upcoming Hong Kong Week 2023 @Bangkok, a celebration of cultural exchange and artistic collaboration organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Joining forces with outstanding artists from Thailand, the HK Phil will present two vibrant concerts at Mahidol University in Bangkok on 21 and 22 October 2023.

Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra: Shostakovich Piano Concerto (21 October)

 

The HK Phil will offer a remarkable introduction to the Hong Kong Week 2023@ Bangkok with an opening concert in the Prince Mahidol Hall of Mahidol University. To celebrate this extravaganza with Thailand, the orchestra will bring along renowned Thai musicians, pianist Poom Prommachart and its Principal Trumpet Nitiphum Bamrungbanthum, for this special occasion. Together, they will perform Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto which features solo trumpet almost as much as the piano. The HK Phil Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman will open the programme with Ravel’s La valse and conclude with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, which depicts in colourful music the exotic tales of A Thousand and One Nights.

On the following day, the brass and percussion sections of the HK Phil will echo with their counterparts from the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Under the batons of Lorenzo Iosco and Thanapol Setabrahmana, this joint orchestra will perform notable fanfares that demonstrate festivities and solemness of the orchestral brass.

Lio Kuokman, conductor [full description]
Currently Resident Conductor of the HK Phil, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Macao Orchestra, and Programme Director of the Macao International Music Festival, Lio Kuokman was praised by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “a startling conducting talent”. He won the second prize, Audience Prize and Orchestra Prize at the third Svetlanov International Conducting Competition in Paris, and served as the first Chinese Assistant Conductor at the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has successfully collaborated with many leading orchestras across the globe. 

 

Poom Prommachart, piano [full description]
Poom Prommachart received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music, as well as Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music in London on a full scholarship sponsored by the late Princess of Thailand. He was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal from His Majesty King Charles III. In May 2023, his performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no. 3 and Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy won him the Best Solo Performance Instrumental – Music at the 18th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards.

 

Nitiphum Bamrungbanthum, tumpet [full description]
Currently Principal Trumpet of the HK Phil, Nitiphum Bamrungbanthum was born in Khon Kaen, Thailand. He started playing trumpet at the age of 14, and graduated from the College of Music, Mahidol University, under the instruction of Dr Joseph Bowman. Nitiphum was appointed Principal Trumpet of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 20. He has appeared regularly as a soloist, orchestral and chamber music performer internationally. He is the founder of the award-winning Zero Brass Quintet and an endorsing artist for Yamaha trumpets.

Lorenzo Iosco, conductor [full description]
Lorenzo Iosco is an Italian clarinettist and conductor based in Hong Kong where he is Associate Principal Bass Clarinet of the HK Phil. He has been a member of the Madrid Opera House Teatro Real in Spain and the London Symphony Orchestra respectively. As soloist, he performed all major clarinet repertoires in Europe and Asia. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of Ensemble Ubertini, a chamber orchestra based in Tuscany. In 2021, Lorenzo made his conducting debut with the HK Phil.

 

Thanapol Setabrahmana, conductor [full description]
Thanapol Setabrahmana is currently Assistant Music Director of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Music Director of the Mahidol Wind Orchestra, and Chair of the Conducting and Ensembles Department at the College of Music in Mahidol University. As conductor, composer and arranger, Setabrahmana’s works have been drawing younger audiences into the concert hall through cross-disciplinary and creative programming.

 

Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra [full description]
Since its founding in 2005 the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra has been a significant force in Thailand’s musical and cultural scene, always pushing forward with promoting the appreciation of orchestral music and music education in the Thai society. Under the musical leadership of Chief Conductor Alfonso Scarano, the orchestra has earned worldwide recognition for its performances of orchestral masterworks and its promotion of new works, especially those of Thai composers.
