Programme
The HK Phil presents a programme which showcases music from the East and the West, echoing the vibrant cultural mix of Hong Kong.
Celebrated Chinese composer Tan Dun is a master at weaving traditional Eastern elements into Western symphonic forms. He won an Oscar for his original music for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and later created a concert work from the timeless score, for solo cello and orchestra, played here by renowned cellist Trey Lee and the HK Phil.
Finland’s musical father Jean Sibelius drew inspiration from the beautiful nature of his homeland. His masterly Seventh Symphony is like a river, flowing with the joy of life and vitality. In this performance, the HK Phil and Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman lyrically craft a musical landscape that depicts the stunning Nordic scenery. The concert opens with a work exploring "The Perennial Question of Existence" by one of America’s most innovative and original composers, Charles Ives.
