Matthew White

American tenor Matthew White, whom the New York Classical Review said had a “distinctive tenor [with a] dark and powerful lyric sound” performs, in the 2024-2025 season, the title role in Don Carlo at Royal Danish Theatre and Prince Vassily Galitsin at the Salzburg Easter Festival in Khovanshchina conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. In concert, White joins Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Hong Kong Philharmonic in Émigré.

 

In previous seasons, Matthew White performed Don José in Carmen at Vancouver Opera, Alfredo in La traviata at Houston Grand Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly at Opéra de Montréal, Duca in Rigoletto at Utah Opera, and in his European debut, Don José in Carmen at Oper im Steinbruch in Austria. On the concert stage, he sang the Shepherd in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex at the Houston Symphony, and Handel’s Messiah at the Nashville Symphony and the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

 

A favourite of competitions, White was awarded the Grand Prize of the Gerda Lissner International Vocal Competition, 1st place in the Deborah Voigt International Vocal Competition, 2nd place in the Metropolitan Opera Mid-Atlantic region, the Grand Prize in the Mario Lanza Vocal Competition, an Encouragement Award from the George London Foundation, and is the recipient of the Alfonso Cavaliere Award. A trained violinist, White is also an avid surfer and runs his own surfboard business, which currently has clients around the world.
